With this simple principle and innate desire to know one’s family roots and history. You can unearth a deluge of family history, lore and traditions awaiting to be rediscovered. These findings an stories will be part of our family’s legacy to bequest to future generations.
Our story
The above picture is a five generation picture, that started my genealogical journey.
Five Generations pic. Where my love of genealogy started. Standing from left to right. My Mother Brenda Norton, Gretchen McQueen Harland ( my Great Grandmother), JoAnn Harland Norton ( my maternal grandmother an Gretchen’s daughter an Brenda’s mom), sitting Louella Mary Edwards Panell ( my great great Grandmother an Gretchen’s mother), sitting on her lap (me) Robin L. Hughey.
This picture sat on my grandmother Joann Harland Norton dresser my whole life in a quaint little frame, until she passed away in 1987. It was accompanied by a news article, which was featured in the local newspaper in McAlester Oklahoma. Our numerous conversations about the photo through the years always makes me smile. I would ask, over and over again through the years, until I knew exactly who these people where. “That’s your mama? “ “ An that’s your grandma?” “That’s me?”What I didn’t know then and come to realize now. Is how truly special this picture is. I had a chance to meet a great great grandmother and be photographed with her.
